A clean-water toilet overflow. Annoying, not dangerous.
Clean water on a bathroom floor is the easiest loss there is, if it is dried inside the EPA's 24 to 48 hour window.
What is probably happening
- The fill valve stuck open and the tank overflowed, or a clog sent a flush of clean water over the rim.
- Water from the tank is potable, so it is Category 1 under IICRC S500. Water that went through a used bowl is at least Category 2. Be honest with yourself about which one this was.
- Bathroom floors are tiled for a reason. The risk is what ran under the vanity, through the floor into the ceiling below, or into the hallway carpet.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Turn the small valve behind the toilet clockwise to stop the fill.
- Lift the tank lid and pull the float up if the valve is stuck.
- Towel the floor and check the ceiling of the room below.
- Pull back any carpet at the bathroom doorway and get air moving on it.
- Plunge the clog only after the water level has dropped.
Do not
- Do not flush again to see if it cleared. That is how one overflow becomes two.
- Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into a toilet.
Who to call
A licensed plumber
The fix is a fill valve or a clog, which is plumbing. Restoration is only needed if water reached carpet, the ceiling below, or sat overnight.

Ask this contractor, on the phone, before anyone comes out
Tap each one as you ask it.
- Was it the fill valve, the flapper or a clog, and is the part in the price?
- If it is a clog, did it clear at the toilet or is it further down the line?
- Should the wax ring be checked after this much water?
End the call if
- A recommendation to replace the toilet for a stuck fill valve.
- A camera inspection of the sewer sold for a single-toilet clog with no other symptoms.
