What we cannot promise you

Starting here, because everyone else starts with the badge.

• We cannot promise the contractor who answers is honest. We have not met them, we do not supervise them, and we are not standing in your kitchen when the price changes. Character is not something a referral service can verify, and a badge saying otherwise is decoration.
• We cannot promise their licence is current at the moment you hire. Licences lapse and insurance expires between any check and any job. That is why every page on this site tells you to look the number up yourself, and tells you where.
• We cannot promise the price is fair. We can tell you what the work costs nationally, with the source linked, and let you judge the number in front of you.
• We are not a party to your contract. Your agreement is with the contractor. If it goes wrong, it goes wrong between you and them.
• We do not control who picks up. Where a call is routed through a partner network, that network applies its own contractor requirements, not ours. We would rather say that plainly than imply a chain of custody we do not hold.

What we actually do

Three things, and all three are checkable by you without our help.

1. We publish what the work costs. Every figure on this site names its source and links to it. Where two sources disagree, the page says so instead of averaging them into something tidier. Where we could not source a number to anything credible, we left it out, and there are several places on this site where exactly that happened.
2. We publish the questions. Seven that apply to every trade, plus the two or three that only matter for your specific job, each with what a real operator sounds like and what the tell sounds like. Written to be asked out loud, in order, to three different people.
3. We publish how to verify. Licence number against the state board, certificate of insurance from the insurer, written scope with the exclusions named. Five minutes, and it does not involve us at all.

That is the whole product. It does not make you safe. It makes you a much harder person to overcharge, which is the only thing anyone can honestly sell you here.

We are one of your three calls

This is the part most referral sites will not put in writing, so read it carefully.

We tell you to call three contractors and compare them. We are paid when you call through the number on this site, which means one of those three calls pays us and the other two do not. That is a real conflict and pretending otherwise would be exactly the behaviour this site exists to warn you about.

So: treat our number as one of your three, not as the answer. Run the same seven questions on us that you run on the other two. If the contractor who answers our line cannot produce a licence number and a certificate of insurance, hang up and use one of the other two, and then tell us, because that is the only enforcement a service like this actually has.

We would rather be one honest call out of three than the only call you make on a promise we cannot keep.

How we are paid, and why it is set up this way

BestHonestPro is a free comparison resource, not a contractor. There is nothing to sign up for and we do not sell your details. When we begin connecting callers to contractors, we will be paid a referral fee by the contractor, never by you, and this line will say so.

We are paid the same whether the contractor quotes you high or low, and whether or not you go ahead with the work. That is deliberate. It means we have nothing to gain from talking you into a bigger job than you need. That incentive very much exists further down the chain, which is why the questions on this site are written the way they are.

Why there are no reviews here

We are paid by contractors. A business paid by contractors that also publishes star ratings of contractors is grading its own suppliers, and everyone involved knows which way that grading tends to lean. Rather than run that conflict and ask you to trust us anyway, we removed the temptation. We publish cost data and verification steps, both of which you can check against the original sources we name, and you do the judging.

Tell us when we get it wrong

If a contractor you reached through this site could not produce a licence, a certificate of insurance or a written scope, we want to know, and we will stop sending calls to them. If a figure here has gone stale or we have read a source wrong, send the correction and the source and we will fix it and say that we did. Contact us here.
