What is wrong?Mold

Today

Small patch, but someone in the home is at higher risk

CDC: people with asthma or mold allergy can have severe reactions, and immune compromised people and people with chronic lung disease can get lung infections from mold. Keep them away from it and get it handled.

What is probably happening

  • The mold itself is the same small surface growth anyone else would clean.
  • The difference is who does the cleaning and who is in the room while it happens. Scrubbing releases spores.
  • The EPA says to consult a health professional before starting cleanup if you have health concerns.

Do this in the next five minutes

  1. Keep the at risk person out of that room. Close the door.
  2. Do not run a fan pointed at the patch. It spreads spores.
  3. If a healthy adult in the home is willing, they can clean it with an N95, goggles, gloves, detergent and water, with the at risk person out of the house.
  4. Otherwise, call a mold remediation contractor and tell them the patch is under 10 square feet so the quote matches the job.
  5. Ask the at risk person's doctor whether they should stay elsewhere until it is done.

Do not

  • Do not let the at risk person do the cleaning or sit in the room during it.
  • Do not accept a whole house protocol for a small patch because of the health history. The EPA guide's size tiers do not change with the occupant.
  • Do not buy an air test to prove the house is safe afterwards. The EPA says no federal limits exist for mold in air, so no number can make that promise.

Who to call

A mold remediation contractor

This is a cleaning job, not a drying job. A remediator removes the material under containment so the spores do not reach the person who cannot afford them.

BestHonestPro is a free comparison resource, not a contractor. There is nothing to sign up for and we do not sell your details. When we begin connecting callers to contractors, we will be paid a referral fee by the contractor, never by you, and this line will say so.

What it should cost

$500 to $1,000

Bathroom sized remediation, national range

National published range, not a quote for your job. The full cost table for this trade is on the mold page.

Ask this contractor, on the phone, before anyone comes out

Tap each one as you ask it.

  • I have someone at risk in the home. Will you set up containment for a patch this size, and what does that look like?
  • Will you HEPA vacuum the area when you are done?
  • What is the moisture source, and is fixing it inside this price?
  • Did your company also do any testing here?

End the call if

  • Pressure to sign today because 'black mold' is dangerous. CDC says you do not need to know the type of mold.
  • A whole house fogging or ozone treatment sold on the health history.
  • The tester and the remover are the same company.
Insurance. Mold is generally covered only when it follows a covered sudden water loss. Gradual leaks and seepage are excluded. (Texas Department of Insurance)
