Basement mold on a dry floor: size it, then decide
Dry means the growth has stopped. Now it is a size question. Under about 10 square feet the EPA says you can handle it. Beyond that it is a contractor with containment.
What is probably happening
- A past seep, a humid summer, or stored cardboard and fabric against a cool wall.
- Mold on stored items is the item's problem. Mold on the wall or joists is the house's problem.
- Painted block or concrete is a hard surface and cleans. Drywall, carpet and padding in a basement usually do not, and come out.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Bag and throw out moldy cardboard, fabric and carpet padding. Do not shake it out indoors.
- Measure the growth on the walls and framing. Photograph it.
- Under 10 square feet on block or concrete: N95, goggles, gloves, detergent and water, dry completely.
- Larger, or on drywall or wood: get contractor quotes that name the square footage.
- Buy a hygrometer. Run a dehumidifier to keep the basement below 60 percent humidity.
Do not
- Do not paint over it with a 'mold proof' paint. Mold underneath keeps going.
- Do not fog or ozone the basement. It does not remove anything, and the EPA says dead mold still causes allergic reactions.
- Do not store cardboard on the floor again. Plastic bins on shelves.
