Dusty burning smell on first heat: usually normal
Dust settles on the heat exchanger and burners over summer and burns off the first time the furnace runs. Trane says the smell should dissipate relatively quickly, and to wait it out for about ten minutes.
What is probably happening
- Summer dust burning off the heat exchanger and burners. It smells like a hot iron or a dusty radiator.
- It should fade within about ten minutes. If it does, you are fine.
- If it smells like plastic or wire, or it does not fade, that is a different problem: turn the unit off and use the electrical smell path.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Let it run for ten minutes and see if the smell fades.
- Change the air filter. A clogged filter at the start of heating season makes the smell worse and raises energy use.
- Open a window for a few minutes if the smell bothers you.
- Check that nothing is stored against or on top of the furnace: boxes, paint, cleaning products.
Do not
- Do not ignore a smell that gets stronger or turns to hot plastic. That is electrical, and the unit should go off.
- Do not store anything flammable near the furnace.
