What is probably happening
- Angi puts a replacement at $1,230 on average, typically $754 to $1,707 per door, with labor at $200 to $500 of that.
- Insulated doors run $1,100 to $4,200 and average $1,500 against $1,200 for an uninsulated door. Worth it on an attached garage, especially under living space.
- Steel is the volume choice at $650 to $3,200. Wood $900 to $4,500. Aluminum $600 to $2,900. Glass runs to $8,000.
- A new opener adds $200 to $1,300 and old door removal $50 to $200, so make sure the quote says whether those are in.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Measure the opening: width, height, headroom above, side room each side. Quotes need all four.
- Decide insulated or not. Polystyrene panels are the cheaper option ($400 to $1,100), polyurethane foam is stiffer and better insulated ($700 to $1,600).
- Decide whether the opener stays. If it is more than 15 years old, price a new one in the same visit.
- Get three itemized quotes: door, hardware, springs (both), track, labor, removal, permit, opener.
- Ask each for the door's R-value and the spring cycle rating in writing.
Do not
- Do not pay a large deposit. Massachusetts consumer regulators: never pay for the job in advance, and get a contract for every job.
- Do not accept a quote without a spring cycle rating. Angi: standard springs are rated 10,000 to 20,000 cycles.
- Do not reuse old springs on a new door of a different weight.
