A dented panel on a working door. Cosmetic, until it is not
If the door runs smoothly and seals, there is no rush. If the dent is at a hinge or the door now catches, treat it as a track problem.
What is probably happening
- A shallow dent in a steel or aluminum panel from a ball, a bike, or a bumper. The door still runs true.
- A deeper crease across a panel that has weakened it. The panel may start to buckle where the opener pulls.
- On a sectional door, single panels can be replaced. On tilt-up and one-piece doors, Angi says the whole door has to be replaced.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Run the door once by hand with the opener disconnected (door closed first, then pull the release). If it moves smoothly and stays balanced, it is cosmetic for now.
- Check the hinges on the dented panel for cracks.
- Photograph the dent with a tape measure in frame.
- Ask two companies whether the panel is available for your door model. Older doors often are not, and the answer decides repair versus replace.
- Small dents in aluminum can be pushed out. Angi puts a professional small dent repair at about $200.
Do not
- Do not put a heat gun or a hammer on a foam-insulated steel panel. You will delaminate it.
- Do not ignore a dent that has started to fold when the door moves. That is the panel the opener will tear next.
