Low pressure at every tap. Usually the regulator, a valve, or a hidden leak.
Low pressure alone does not damage anything. A leak causing it does, so check the meter today and book the plumber this week.
What is probably happening
- The pressure reducing valve (a bell shaped fitting on the main line) has failed. They wear out.
- The main valve or the meter valve is partly closed.
- An underground leak on the service line is stealing pressure. The meter moves with everything off.
- In older homes, galvanized pipe has narrowed with rust. That is a repipe conversation, not an emergency.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Check the main valve is fully open. Gate valve wheel all the way counterclockwise.
- Turn everything off and watch the meter for two minutes. Movement means a leak.
- Ask a neighbor if their pressure dropped too. If so, call the utility.
- Note whether hot and cold are both weak. Hot only points at the water heater.
Do not
- Do not turn the screw on the pressure regulator yourself to 'boost' it. Too high a setting bursts washer hoses and trips the water heater relief valve.
- Do not buy a booster pump before someone has measured the pressure.
- Do not accept a repipe quote on the first visit for a pressure complaint.
