After-hours service: know the premium before you say yes

The after-hours premium is real but bounded. Knowing the number stops a stressed 9 pm phone call from becoming a blank cheque.

What is probably happening

  • National data puts HVAC labor at $100 to $250 an hour, a service call at $100 to $250, and after-hours work adding $40 to $80 an hour on top.
  • One industry vendor describes a $150 an hour standard rate becoming $225 to $300 an hour at 2 am.
  • A maintenance contract usually buys a discounted after-hours rate and a promised response time. That is the main thing you are paying for.
  • If the problem is a walk-in with product at risk or a gas or CO event, the premium is worth it. If it is a comfort problem at closing time, it can often wait for the morning rate.

Do this in the next five minutes

  1. Decide whether it can wait. Gas, CO, a walk-in warming or a flood of condensate cannot. A warm office at 6 pm can.
  2. If you rent, check who is responsible before you authorise anything (see the ownership leaf).
  3. On the phone, ask for the after-hours service call fee, the hourly rate and the minimum hours, and write them down with the time and the name.
  4. Ask what the same visit would cost at 8 am tomorrow.
  5. Authorise diagnosis only. Ask for a call with the finding and the price before any repair.

Do not

  • Do not authorise 'whatever it takes' on the phone.
  • Do not pay cash or full payment up front for an after-hours call.
  • Do not accept a replacement decision at night. Diagnose tonight, decide tomorrow.

Who to call

A licensed commercial HVAC contractor, ideally the one holding your maintenance contract

The contractor with your contract already knows the unit and has agreed a rate. A cold call at night pays the full premium.

BestHonestPro is a free comparison resource, not a contractor. There is nothing to sign up for and we do not sell your details. When we begin connecting callers to contractors, we will be paid a referral fee by the contractor, never by you, and this line will say so.

What it should cost

$100 to $250 per hour, plus $40 to $80 per hour after hours; service call $100 to $250

Ask this contractor, on the phone, before anyone comes out

Tap each one as you ask it.

  • What is the after-hours service call fee, the hourly rate and the minimum hours, right now?
  • What would the same visit cost during business hours tomorrow?
  • Will you call me with the finding and a price before doing any repair?
  • Is the diagnostic fee credited if I go ahead with the repair?
  • Are you licensed in this state, and what is the license number I can check tonight?

End the call if

  • No rate given on the phone.
  • Cash only, or full payment before the truck leaves the yard.
  • A replacement quote at night.
