NIOSH says the exposure routes are breathing it in, getting it into eyes, nose or mouth, and skin absorption of liquid forms, and that disturbing powder can put it into the air.
What is probably happening
- Powder, pills, foil, straws or paraphernalia found in a rental, an inherited home or a family member's room.
- The EPA notes that fentanyl particles are small enough to become airborne easily, which is why the rule is to leave it alone.
- Police take custody of the drugs. A cleanup company then decontaminates surfaces and removes porous items that may hold residue.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Leave the room and close the door. Keep children and pets out.
- Call the police. If anyone is drowsy, breathing slowly or unresponsive, call 911 and say you suspect an opioid overdose.
- If you touched anything, wash your hands with soap and water. Do not use hand sanitizer or bleach on skin.
- Once police have taken the material, call a biohazard cleanup company that lists drug residue work.
- Ask them what surfaces and items they will test or remove.

- Do not vacuum or sweep. NIOSH's guidance is to avoid any task that may cause the drug to become airborne.
- Do not bag it yourself to hand over. Let police handle it.
- Do not let a general cleaner wipe the room down and call it done.
