A used needle can carry hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV, and hepatitis B remains infectious on surfaces for at least seven days.
What is probably happening
- One or two syringes in a yard, a rental, a parking strip or a family member's room is a careful household job with a container. Many is a cleanup company job.
- The FDA says sharps go straight into an FDA-cleared sharps container or a heavy-duty plastic household container with a tight lid, such as an empty laundry detergent bottle, and never loose in the trash.
- Cities and counties have drop-off sites and household hazardous waste programs for the full container.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Put on thick gloves. Get a rigid container with a screw lid, such as an empty detergent bottle.
- Use tongs or pliers to pick up each needle, point away from you, and drop it in point first.
- Do not recap, bend or break needles.
- Screw the lid on tight and label it 'sharps'.
- Call your local waste authority or Safe Needle Disposal at 1-800-643-1643 for where to take it.
- If there are many, or they are in a couch, carpet or a hoarded room, stop and call a biohazard cleanup company.
Do not
- Do not put loose needles in a trash bag. The FDA warns against it; the next person to handle the bag gets stuck.
- Do not pick them up bare-handed or with thin gloves.
- Do not ignore a stick. Report it and get medical evaluation the same day; preventive treatment depends on timing.
