Heavy animal waste through a home. Treat it as a biohazard job
Waste soaked into flooring and subfloor breeds bacteria and ammonia, and the volume puts it beyond what gloves and bleach can handle.
What is probably happening
- Months of urine and feces from many animals goes through carpet and padding into subfloor. Cleaning the surface does not reach it.
- Bat and bird droppings in an attic can carry fungal spores, and rodent waste can carry hantavirus; the same do-not-sweep rule applies.
- The job is removal of soaked materials, disinfection, odor treatment, and often new subfloor and flooring, which is a separate trade.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Open windows and keep the doors to unaffected rooms closed.
- If animals are still in the home, call animal control or a rescue first. The cleanup cannot start around them.
- Photograph each room for insurance and, if it is a rental, for the landlord or tenant file.
- Call a biohazard cleanup company that lists animal waste work and ask the questions below.
- Keep children out until the work is done.
Do not
- Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings. That puts them into the air.
- Do not pour bleach across a whole floor. It does not reach the padding and the fumes in a closed room are dangerous.
- Do not accept a price that bundles new flooring into the cleanup without itemizing it.

Ask this contractor, on the phone, before anyone comes out
Tap each one as you ask it.
- What comes out (carpet, padding, subfloor, insulation) and what is treated in place?
- How is the waste bagged and disposed of?
- How do you treat the odor, and is that a separate charge?
- Is any rebuild in this quote, and is it itemized?
- Will the scope be in writing before you start?
End the call if
- The company will not say where the waste goes.
- Cash only, or no written scope.
- A promise to shampoo and deodorize instead of removing soaked material.
