What is probably happening
- A strong sweet smell that is worst in one wall or ceiling and comes and goes with the heat is the usual sign.
- Wildlife removal companies locate it, cut an access if needed, remove the carcass, and sanitize the spot. Contaminated insulation is often replaced.
- In a yard or garage, a small animal can be bagged with gloves and disposed of with the trash in most places; check your city's rules.
Do this in the next five minutes
- Ventilate the room and close the doors between it and the rest of the house.
- For a small dead rodent you can reach, follow the CDC method: gloves, spray with bleach solution, bag it twice, outdoor covered trash.
- For anything you cannot see or reach, or a larger animal, call a wildlife removal company.
- Ask if they will find and seal how it got in.
- If the smell is in a wall, ask how they will open it and who repairs the drywall.
